Run Mana Road!
Come join us for a 40-mile run through the "back-country" behind magnificent Mauna Kea. There is a 50-mile option for those wanting a HURT qualifier.
This is a club run, so the fee is for your March club membership. The run is from the top of Mana Road (where it intersects with the Mauna Kea Access Road) 40 miles down to the end of the dirt/start of the pavement in Waimea. It is a net downhill run (but you'll still get about 2,500ft of climbing). The course winds around the "back" of Mauna Kea, providing spectacular views and soul-filling miles filled with the amazing "mana" (energy) that only the Big Island can provide. The 50-miler starts at the Pu'u Huluhulu parking lot, goes up Mauna Loa Access Road a short way, and then back down and across to Mauna Kea Access Road (where it joins the 40-miler course). This is a mostly-self-supported run. There may be a crew vehicle driving up & down the road to support runners (if I can bribe someone into doing it), but support/supplies will likely be limited. You can have your own crew support (4WD vehicle is necessary for the upper 25-ish miles of the road), or stash supplies along the course (off the road, please) the day before. If you choose to stash supplies, please be sure to pick up everything you left along the road by the next day. I'm trying to arrange some support or supply drops, so stay tuned for updates on that.
Since we're starting early in the morning, plan on needing a headlamp at the start. Plan for traditional "Hawaii Mountain Weather" (meaning it will be chilly in the morning, and probably warm during the day, with anything from blazing sun to pouring rain and wind possible).
