Description
The inaugural Old Military Trail Marathon and Half Marathon will take place on March 19th. The event will begin approximately 15 miles north of Talihina, OK at the Boardstand Trailhead off of Holson Valley Road (see course description for map and more specific directions). The marathon is actually only about 23 miles but who's counting. The course is technical with significant elevation gain. It is very difficult but also very beautiful.
While most people with some training should be able to finish the half marathon, the full is considerably more difficult and only experienced trail and marathon runners should attempt it. If you have any doubt, do the half marathon this year and try the full next year.
We will have a pre-race pasta dinner at Talimena State Park and a post race cookout at the trailhead. You may want to camp with us at Talimena State Park. They have everything from primitive tent sites to full RV sites and showers. We will rent the pavillion for dinner.
The race will be limited to the first 110 entries. The parking and other logistical considerations make it very difficult to accomodate any more than that. Originally the race was going to start and finish at Talimena State Park but parking is very limited there.
There are no restrooms or electricity or facilities at the trailhead. There are restrooms at the top of the mountain at the beginning of the Talimena Drive as well as at Talimena State Park. The town of Talihina has a few small motels and a bed and breakfast. There are also cabins available to rent in the area.
Parking will be along Holson Valley Road.
