DESCRIPTION
This is a completely virtual self-supported running/walking event. *** FOR THIS INAUGURAL EVENT, A PORTION (ROUGHLY 50%) OF THE PROCEEDS WILL GO TO THE DES MOINES NORTH CROSS COUNTRY PROGRAM - a local, inner-city high school. The portion donated will be any fee above the cost of a shirt, recognition items, and mailing. A tax-donation receipt will be sent with the official amount following the event.
Though this is the first annual running of the Super Moon Ultra; it is our hope that it becomes an annual event. Participants will be able to collect the different super moons while supporting a different cause each year.
On August 1, 2023, the Super Sturgeon Moon will be traveling across our sky. Depending on where you are in the world, the moon will provide over nine hours of Super Moon running pleasure. In the organizer’s hometown, the moon is set to rise at 9:06 pm on Tuesday, August 1st, and set the following morning at 6:55 am, Wednesday, August 2nd (a duration of 9 hours and 49 minutes of full-moon viewing pleasure!!!). Therefore, it is only fitting that the official maximum duration of this virtual run is 9 hours and 49 minutes (9.75 hours). However, you may choose to run/walk for any length of time or distance! Take a couple of days off from work and experience this magnificent celestial event … or don’t take days off – you’ll have plenty of time to get home from work, eat, and rest before the start time. Likewise, you’ll have plenty of time to shower, eat, and drive to work the next morning. Worried about not being able to focus at work the next day? Simply blame your zombie-like behavior on the Super Moon and everyone will understand. Either way, you won’t want to miss this!
REGISTRATION OPTIONS
There are different registration options. For $75, you will donate to the North High School Cross Country Program PLUS you will receive a race t-shirt and a unique finisher award. IF you would just like to donate and not receive the t-shirt and finisher award, use the code "justdonate" at checkout and you will only pay $40 (thank you for the donation!!). If you would just like to participate without donating or receiving a t-shirt or finishers award, use the code "justfun" at checkout and you will not be charged.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Simply register, train, plan a favorite running/walking route, then admire the Super Sturgeon Moon as we virtually enjoy each other’s company during this incredible ultra-duration event!
Because weather is often unpredictable and always uncontrollable, we recognize that weather may prevent some from running during the night of August 1st. Because of this, official results will be collected from any overnight run/walk that begins between August 1, 9:06 pm and finishes on or before Sunday, August 6, 6:55 am.
You will need to submit your final mileage on this site. You will have until Sunday, August 6, 11:59 pm to submit your mileage. Note, that although you sign up for the maximum duration of 9.75 hours, you do not have to run/walk for that full time. You will simply run/walk for any duration up to that time and log your mileage on this website. For the top awards (noted below), you will need actual mileage proof. For everyone else, we will accept simply a picture of the trail/road you ran on with the moon in the background. If it is cloudy, a picture of the trail will suffice - or get creative.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS
It is our hope that you get out and enjoy the Super Moon for any length of time which is why we encourage you to register to participate and share your pictures and experience on our social media pages. Though you will select the 9.75 duration when you register, you will simply run/walk for whatever duration you would like - just be sure to submit your mileage on this website following the run. You will then receive recognition for whatever distance you end up running. Please know, we completely understand if you end up only running for two hours because you stopped and admired the moon for five hours. You may actually get more benefit from that than you would from running for seven hours.
All participants will get a t-shirt and some type of recognition (to be determined in the coming weeks) for participating in this first of many annual events.
RECOGNITION AND AWARDS
Because this virtual run has been organized by a group of committed and financially aware organizers, all recognitions, awards, and shirts will be ordered and then sent out following the event. We appreciate your patience with this process. This will be most cost-efficient for the organizers and better tailored to the level and duration of runs exhibited by the participants.
You will receive recognition (medal or other most extraordinary item) for the specific duration/distance you run.
Those participants that achieve any ultra-marathon distance (greater than 26.2 miles) will receive special recognition as an Ultra Full Moon finisher. The male, female, and non-binary participant that runs the greatest number of miles will receive the Super Ultra Full Moon Award. *** Please note that in order for your run/walk to be eligible for the Ultra Full Moon finisher award or Super Ultra Full Moon Award, you will need to include show mileage proof through some tracking (i.e., Garmin, Strava, etc.).
SWAG
Yes, there will be a race shirt; it is being designed by a local artist and will be sent to you following the virtual event. The design was voted on in early June and a rough sketch has been posted as a picture above. Oher items may be included in your Swag Bag.
SHARE YOUR ADVENTURE
A Facebook page has been created for you to all share photos of your Super Full Sturgeon Moon adventure.
